MAT Treatment FAQs

What is medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?

Medication-assisted treatment combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat opioid use disorder. At NewLeaf Recovery Services, we will use Suboxone (buprenorphine-naloxone) to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms while our counselors help you build recovery skills. MAT is evidence-based treatment recognized by SAMHSA and the National Institute on Drug Abuse as the gold standard for opioid addiction.

How is Suboxone different from methadone?

Suboxone contains buprenorphine and naloxone, offering a safer profile with lower overdose risk compared to methadone. Unlike methadone which requires daily clinic visits, Suboxone can be prescribed for take-home use after stabilization. This flexibility allows you to maintain work, family, and other responsibilities while in treatment.

How long does MAT treatment last?

Treatment duration varies based on individual needs. Some patients benefit from short-term MAT (6-12 months) while others may require longer-term maintenance. Research shows that staying in treatment longer improves outcomes. Your provider will work with you to determine the appropriate duration based on your recovery goals and progress.

Will insurance cover MAT treatment?

We accept Medicaid and self-pay. Additional insurance plans are being added through credentialing. The Affordable Care Act requires most plans to cover substance use disorder treatment. We also offer self-pay options and can help connect you with financial assistance programs.

Is Suboxone safe to use long-term?

Yes, Suboxone is safe for long-term use when taken as prescribed. Buprenorphine has been extensively studied and is FDA-approved for opioid use disorder treatment. Many patients successfully use Suboxone for years as part of their recovery maintenance. Your provider monitors your health regularly and adjusts treatment as needed.

Can I work while on MAT?

Absolutely. One of the advantages of Suboxone treatment is that it allows you to function normally in daily life. Unlike full opioids, buprenorphine does not cause significant sedation or impairment when taken as prescribed. Many patients maintain employment, education, and family responsibilities throughout their MAT treatment.
